Patrons of the Breakfast Klub know they can expect plates of great Southern food and a line that spills out the door facing Travis and winds around the corner along West Alabama. To the regulars' chagrin, the morning queue may be even longer after May 15. That's when Good Morning America Weekend will feature the popular Midtown restaurant as one of four finalists for Best Breakfast in America.
The Breakfast Klub staff and owner Marcus Davis whipped up their beloved Wings and Waffles for the GMA Weekend TV crew Tuesday morning in hopes of winning the ABC morning show's best breakfast challenge.Several customers wrote essays nominating the Breakfast Klub, Davis said, so he was excited but not surprised when the he got the call that his restaurant is a finalist.“I knew Houstonians would show up and represent Houston well,” he said. Davis says the eatery has two signature dishes: Catfish and Grits and Wings and Waffles. Davis went with the combo of waffles dusted with powdered sugar and garnished with a strawberry paired with the fried chicken wings. Of course, waffle toppings may vary, Davis said. GMA Weekend anchor Marysol Castro and the staff enjoyed the meal, Davis said.Chronicle restaurant critic Alison Cook describes that formidable fried chicken thusly: “… The crackly, salted-and-peppered chicken wings propped around the waffle's rim fulfill the same function as a good piece of bacon would. You take a bite of the high, fluffy waffle and its discreet dusting of powdered sugar with maybe a little hot syrup from the serve-yourself vat at the back of the room. Then you take a bite of chicken wing, letting the crisp shards of crust fall every which way. Sweet and savory, savory and sweet, just as natural as alternating bites of pancake and bacon.”
